Did Someone Drop You on Your Head as a Child!?

Yes.

Yes, as a matter of fact someone did drop me on my head as a child.

“There’s something I’ve always remembered and I don’t know what it is. It’s black and there’s something very cold in my throat?,” ” I asked in my early twenties.

“I didn’t know you remembered that,” my mother said. (link 2 maren Name) “ you almost died.”

“I don’t really remember - I just remember something very cold in my throat and black-”

Nothing but black. And warmth. Not the type of warmth that is about or at all concerned with temperature . Nor was it the warmth of good manners. No the not at all frightening while all encompassing black was accompanied by a very particular warmth and quiet.

Quiet, not all quiets are the same. There is the so quiet you could hear pin drop-

-because you’re waiting for the other shoe to drop.

And too the quiet of absence, the absence of any man made mechanized sound. The near absolute quiet of being under water. The roaring quiet of tension so thick it is as if two conch shells were placed over ones ears. Absolute waveless stillness- it was that kind of quiet in the black warmth but a lump of cold in my throat?

I always wondered but hadn’t bothered asking until my early twenties. For just like my name the question might well be a secret Martha had been keeping and had recently been purging.

“It was summer very hot, unusually hot for Minnesota” my mother said over the phone “we had just moved, no air conditioning - so I gave you an ice cube to suck on. You choked, turned blue -the phone hadn‘t been on yet- we had just moved…”.

‘That explains the lump of cold,’ I thought finally being able to place this odd recurrent sense memory.

“I was three months pregnant- couldn’t call an ambulance, the neighbors were an acre away so I couldn’t run for help.“

I eventually did the math, both sets of tabulations. I was twenty months old and M(om/artha) was three or four months pregnant with my younger sister .

“So I picked you up by the ankles and shook you up and down hard until the ice cube came out or you would have died.”

That last part was more information, more information than even she knew was telling me and much, much more than I need to know.

For she had been so proud and self congratulatory “I did the can- can with you till I was eight months pregnant,” Martha had said. The conversation had been about eth benefits of exercise and the recent medical research announced and being disseminated: better for baby and moms to stay active during pregnancy. Martha had sat in the driver’s seat of the Volvo and patted herself on the back. For she had done just that, stayed active, did the can-can into her eigth month, until she could do it no longer when she was pregnant with me. Even though that went against her doctor’s advice. it wa sthe opposite of what she and most women were told. She hadn’t rested and taken it easy. On the other hand 20months later while I turned blue choking the acre was too far, too much exertion, too much of a risk. But Martha had shared these two truths so far out of range of each other, six years or more that I know she never really knew what she’d said, revealed.

Was the child in her already more valuable than I? Yes. Did she follow the rules and medical advice when it cam to that child? Yes, for running to the next door neighbor just at or after her first trimester was far too great a risk. Whereas with me doing the can-can into her third trimester , until she just couldn’t manage it anymore had made perfect sense.

I was the middle child though most records will tell you I was the eldest but there was another who came before me. Him she drowned in alcohol, by her own account. Me she drowned in milk and tried to shake loose. By the third pregnancy I guess she’d decided to give motherhood a try.

“You almost died,” she said of that re-current memory of death and ice and peace “You cried…stuttered for a couple of weeks- because you’d been scared.”

Except I wasn’t scared. I remember how I felt in the that black warm blanket of quiet.

I’m sure I did cry but I suspect it would have been being back that frightened me. Back to quiets that weren’t quiet at all, frightening darkness-es and lights, scalding warmths and cold- but not in my throat.

The contrast would have been what made me cry. The contrast.

SO yes someone did drop on my head as a child.

After which I had evident speech difficulties(stuttering) and balance problems for several months but children are in a state of neuroplasticty. There was a hold over was in the visual center, the same center which would again be bruised but this time by the force of a baby grand landing on my head, twice. A visual problem involving tracking and (essentially) aperture/depth of field adjustment. Worse because it wasn’t the first time?

I do the eye-brain exercises I did as a child again? Yep, and hope that maybe, maybe some day I’ll get to be like all the other kids.

The Life of a Scarecrow

I was standing in line with my documents for DSS, having had and still having the luxury of gathering the required pages by car and thus the effort took a day, without a car it would have been a good 2-3 days. Sitting in my car I started grouping the xeroxes into what I needed to present. I could and can write a brief essay/narrative on such things but put together a bunch of documents that my brain sees as completely unrelated and I quickly get confused.

I had a few weeks gone over the narrative, and gone over it again: where I'd be going, what I'd be getting, etc. Nothing confuses me more than paperwork as the part of my brain that was injured: if it's not a story my brain doesn't know what to do with it and starts firing off data like hail mary passes. But I'd done it, I'd put all the pieces together, organized them and though I remembered the date as 10 rather than 20 - and yes I reread the form several times but when it comes to numbers. I don't know something happens somewhere in my scarecrow head.

I stood waiting in a line that isn't forty people long anymore, federal stimulus money applied to make the system not only newly renovated but technologically more efficient.

The man had been ahead of me and I was hearing the dialogue that was taking place between a woman for DSS, certainly behind bullet proof glass and a man. Nothing startling about the man- a T'shirt, jean shorts and worn shoes.

"I don't have a day off again until next Thursday," the man explained.

"There's nothing I can do," said the DSS employee not at all harshly but wearing the fact that she really couldn't do anything or at least the system couldn't. The exchange went back and forth until the embarrassing admitance.

"I don't have any food, I don't have any money- I am starving," he said.

The woman behind me tapped my back- it was my turn, I hadn't noticed but wondered did he know where the food kitchens, does he know which churches have pantries - I b-lined to the empty window not wanting to hold up the line. My documenst were scanned, I was done and turned around hoping the man would still be there.

I went outside, walked to the bus terminal but there was no sign of him. I'd noted the chinese restraurant across the street and had hoped I'd find him at the bus stop. But no.

I remember when that man was me and I may be him again. I hadn't known I could even get foodstamps, no one had explained to this person with a brain injury what to do, who to contact, how the system works, how to access help- not HASCI, or Family Services or any of the churches I'd contacted over the years. So I sold every bit of gold I possessed for a few weeks.

Now yes- the man may drink, he may be a drug addict on the other hand he may have been and be someone like me who didn't make those choices. To be poor is to live in the bull's eye for me I got two notices today:

1) If I'd only received a notice less than a week earlier, mere days

2) The other a phone message perhaps telling me that even though the rent is paid and will be paid I may be have to move again.

Why I don't make enough money to live where I live that'll be arrow 1

Arrow 2 will be unemployement, I'd saved my looking for work sheet for over three months since I had been on unemployment- a full business quarter. I culled paper work last week and now that form is in a landfill. What will be interesting is if I just have to seel my car and pay the state of South Carolina a couple grand or if I now get to experience jail as well.

odd girl out

11.30.09 What were the odds of two men who each in their own way had huge impacts on my life I'd known being pictured at the same time in hazmat suits? One in particular because - does it erally make sense to have your FB picture as a hazmat guy?... in both cases maybe so.

It could just be the bronchitis talking but I was thinking I might be getting to where I'll be done with this site, this identifier. But then again- I may have developed a small, twisted and anonymous following- maybe an audience of one. Feel free to stop by Rev. Anti- Choice.

Part of what got me about 2006 and though I couldn't write about it- I probably could now. Any way what got me was that there's no making up source material that rich and unlikely. I was, and may again some day be an odd addition to the homeless crowd and maybe Ramon is right, maybe Michelle is as well and maybe I will book it someday but for now. Maybe considering the where and how that became this blog- maybe this is still part of that. I've told my biggest secret. So why not? Of course I'll leave it up- another failsafe mechanism, a place to direct some energy should need be or maybe a place to get where I never could get with a guy I met half a lifetime ago.

As I've procrastinated this long, I'm waiting until after the holidays for KY Adult Services. The holidays are hard enough, Kari may wind up getting a call and as she decided to go into a field with the highest yield of suicides. I'd hate to see what her odds look/ed like having already been doubled.

Now to home,
after 15 months of homelessness, 351 days in a homeless shelter - I have one Oh look I buried my lead. What a surprise . And that's why over these years I've needed to process so much John rage see it's the Johns in my life that - well same lies, each one of them. Family is the first crack in the system I feel through; it's a phrase that gets spoken to me, of me regularly: "you feel through every crack in the system". Now that I've finally had access to those who actually know what brain injury is- see they've actually teared up because this sort of thing isn't supposed to happen.

My crash date was June 13, 2001 - amazing the size of the SOS I had to put out; I actually had to do it twice so the state would mandate me to accept help I'd been asking for and denied for 7 years. I hadn't applied for SSDI or SSI because it seemed an irrational notion: If on the state level my file didn't qualify me for assistance - well the idea that I'd qualify on a federal level - that didn't make sense to me- but that's the nice thing about brain injury- everything seems so simple: because you are that simple. It's the crappy thing about brain injury and not having a patient advocate . When I made those calls family were as family's always been.

I finally got the help I needed after two bosses failed to observe my limitations and I went into neurological freefall, not that hadn't happened once already when life required cognitive skills over time periods that I'm simply not capable of maintaining. I have window, once I reach that window I'm either allowed to cocoon with ample silence or white noise- OR, well the or isn't fun for anyone most especially me.

The moment a camera flash goes off unexpectedly and/or turning on a sealedcar's engine and the full sound shock of music set loud, for open windows and speed. That moment can go on for hours, days, weeks.

I'd always been a type A, I pushed myself- whatever it was I pushed and I wound up with something that essentially forbids that or at the very least I start bumping into things, the syllables of words -spoken or typed coming out in the wrong order. Sequence has been my constant nemesis, still is.

Some of the assistance I'd been applying for for years, 7 to be exact but there wasn't enough or the right things in my file. But if you fall hard enough AND publically enough so that there can't be anymore debate as to whether or not you qualify for help, and programs- that you have an actual medical condition. It never did occur to me to ask why HASCI had rejected me as a client, a neighbor years later had said that it didn't make sense. The reason I was rejected, I later found out, was they wanted more medical documentation: mobile PET scans, interactive MRI's. A nice little aspect of american healthcare-less system: though there are services avaliable unless you are already on public assistance or have kickass health insurance- the very system that is there to assist you can't and won't because you're not already in the system. Sounds circular doesn't it?

It took a little over 8 years from the TBI forward for me to get actual help, input, insight from anyone in the field of brain injury, a very limited pool in this state.

Though I haven't logged 10,000 hours- we'll see if I can write this thing.
